capture the life and vitality of my subjects. i am a keen photographer and specialise in taking photographs of insects using a canon sx60 powershot camera and an olympus tough tg5 camera. a collection rockpool guide i sketch in the field using graffwood 3b pencils and a minimal number of watercolours . view some of my paintings here in 2017 i was awarded the h.h. bloomer award by the linnean society . ~ ecologist ~ i carry out a range of ecological work and am able to survey invertebrates, birds, mammals and reptiles. i specialise in the identification of ground beetles and bees. ecological studies of individual species have included various ground beetles, oil beetles and the heath potter wasp. recent projects include an invertebrate survey of road verges for the highways agency, surveying and studying the ecology of the ‘worlds rarest spider’ the horrid ground weaver for buglife, teaching beetle identification to plymouth university students and studying the narrow-headed ant for part of the back from the brink project . i have worked as a consultant entomologist and naturalist on many television and radio programmes. most recently for hugh’s wild west photographs and video clips. i have thousands of images to choose from so am constantly adding new material to my presentations. recently i have given talks for the moor meadows group on gardening for entry or announce an event. latest notebook entries ( view all categories ) narrow-headed ants formica exsecta 12 october 2018 this summer i have been fortunate to be able to spend many hours studying one of britain’s rarest invertebrates, the narrow-headed ant formica exsecta. this ant is now known from a single site in england and several sites in the scottish highlands. it is currently the subject of a back from the brink project which is hoping to return the ant to some of its former sites. small coppers 12 october 2018 the prolonged warm weather over the summer this year has provided optimum conditions for one of our most beautiful butterflies. the small copper lycaena phlaeas is usually quite scarce in the first brood which emerges in may but with warm conditions numbers build up during the summer brood and if conditions remain favourable larger numbers will fly in the third brood during september and october. i visited a lovely wet meadow on the edge of dartmoor and spent a few hours sketching them. at this site there is a profusion of water mint which attracts many insects including these stunning butterflies that look especially beautiful in the soft autumn light. hawfinches 17 april 2018 last winter will be remembered for the large number of overwintering hawfinches. signs of an irruption became apparent in october when large numbers started to appear at migration hotspots including 50 on the isles of scilly. this was probably due to a failure in fruit and seed crops in eastern europe following some late spring frosts. during the winter hawfinches feed on seeds and are especially fond of hornbeam. fortunately it was a mast year for this tree at haldon forest near exeter and stands of hornbeam soon attracted flocks of over 20 hawfinches. much larger numbers were present in the area as over a hundred birds recorded leaving a communal roost nearby in december. it was a great opportunity to watch these often elusive birds. i made several visits to a stand of hornbeam close to some crackling electricity pylons and was rewarded with some excellent views. their typical robin-like ticking calls and softer “shree” flight calls were often the first indication of their presence. by waiting quietly it was possible to observe them feeding on the hornbeam seeds. i was surprised at how acrobatic these large finches could be when picking off as a three year old on the south downs, in hampshire. i now live on the edge of dartmoor in devon with my wife joyce and son oscar. our eldest son barnaby is currently living in an old mill in germany. i enjoy exploring the natural world through through drawing and painting, wildlife in the field. i am also a keen photographer. my interests in natural history are wide with particular focus on the study of insects, birds and rockpool life. my sketches and field paintings are always produced on the spot in the field. for me this is the only way i can capture the life and vitality of my subjects. -- i grew up on hayling island, where surrounded by the bird-filled harbours, sand dunes and the rich habitats of the county i developed a deep passion for the natural world. after graduating from falmouth school of art and design in 1991 i worked for the dartmoor national park authority as a graphic designer. since going freelance in 1999 i now work as a ecologist specialising in invertebrates, wildlife artist and public speaker on a wide variety of projects including an illustrated wildlife diary, ecological studies of invertebrates including the blue ground beetle carabus intricatus , the heath potter wasp eumenes coarctatus and the horrid ground weaver spider nothophantes horridus . i have worked with the bbc natural history unit on many television programmes including the award winning smalltalk diaries, the natural world – earth pilgrim and the david attenborough series – life in the undergrowth. i have also contributed to several living world programmes for radio 4 and more recently have appeared in several short films on the— bbc one show. i have won a number of awards for my drawings and paintings, notably the wildlife art gallery award, in the 1992 european bird artist of the year competition and in 1997 was the british birds bird illustrator of the year. my work has appeared in many books including the devon – wildlife through the seasons
